{"id":3122,"date":"2025-10-26T08:59:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T08:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/?p=3122"},"modified":"2026-09-11T13:37:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T13:37:14","slug":"french-language-proficiency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/express-entry\/french-language-proficiency\/","title":{"rendered":"French Language Proficiency Tests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking French can affect an <a href=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/express-entry\/\">Express Entry<\/a> profile in more than one way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can help increase your <a href=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigration-tools\/canada-express-entry-crs-calculator\/\">Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)<\/a> score, and it can also make you eligible for a separate <strong>French-language proficiency category-based round of invitations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For 2026, Immigration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)<\/a> has renewed French-language proficiency as one of the categories used in Express Entry. Unlike categories such as Healthcare, STEM or Trades, the French category is <strong>not based on your occupation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main category requirement is straightforward: you need approved French test results showing at least <strong>NCLC 7 in speaking, listening, reading and writing<\/strong>. However, reaching NCLC 7 does not automatically mean that you can apply for permanent residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must first qualify for one of the three immigration programs managed through Express Entry and enter the Express Entry pool. IRCC then ranks eligible candidates by CRS during a French-language category round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This guide explains how the French category works, which language tests are accepted, what scores you need, how French can increase your CRS score and what candidates should check before relying on this pathway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-french-language-express-entry-category-overview\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">French Language Express Entry Category Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Requirement<\/th><th>French Language Proficiency Category<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Minimum French level<\/td><td>NCLC 7<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Skills required at NCLC 7<\/td><td>Speaking, listening, reading and writing<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Accepted French tests<\/td><td>TEF Canada or TCF Canada<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Separate occupation list<\/td><td>No<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Canadian work experience required by the category<\/td><td>No<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Foreign work experience allowed<\/td><td>Yes, subject to your underlying Express Entry program<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>English required by the French category<\/td><td>No<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Express Entry eligibility required<\/td><td>Yes<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>CRS still matters<\/td><td>Yes<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Invitation guaranteed after reaching NCLC 7<\/td><td>No<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Language test validity<\/td><td>Less than 2 years when profile is completed and PR application is submitted<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IRCC confirms that French-category candidates must reach at least NCLC 7 in <strong>all four language abilities<\/strong> and must also meet the requirements of the particular invitation round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-is-the-french-language-proficiency-category\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is the French-Language Proficiency Category?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/express-entry\/express-entry-category-based-selection\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/express-entry\/express-entry-category-based-selection\/\">category-based Express Entry selection<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of inviting candidates only through general or program-specific rounds, IRCC can identify people in the Express Entry pool who meet a specific economic priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">French-language proficiency is one of those priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For 2026, IRCC has continued the French-language category to support <a href=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/francophone-community-immigration\/\">Francophone immigration<\/a> and economic growth outside Quebec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>During a French category-based round, IRCC:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identifies candidates in the Express Entry pool who meet the French-category requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ranks those candidates by CRS score.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Invites the highest-ranking candidates, according to the instructions for that round.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So French does not replace the CRS system. It creates a <strong>smaller eligible group within the Express Entry pool<\/strong>, and candidates in that group are still ranked against each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-who-is-eligible-for-the-french-language-express-entry-category\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Is Eligible for the French-Language Express Entry Category?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two levels of eligibility to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-requirement-1-you-must-be-eligible-for-express-entry\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirement 1: You Must Be Eligible for Express Entry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the French category becomes relevant, you must qualify for at least one program managed through Express Entry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/express-entry\/federal-skilled-worker\/\">Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/express-entry\/canadian-experience-class\/\">Canadian Experience Class (CEC)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/federal-skilled-trades\/\">Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must create an Express Entry profile and be accepted into the pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-requirement-2-you-must-meet-the-french-category-requirement\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirement 2: You Must Meet the French Category Requirement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the French-language proficiency category, your approved test results must show at least:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NCLC 7 in all four abilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Speaking: NCLC 7 or higher<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listening: NCLC 7 or higher<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reading: NCLC 7 or higher<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing: NCLC 7 or higher<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-example\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider a candidate with these French levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Ability<\/th><th>NCLC<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Speaking<\/td><td>8<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Listening<\/td><td>7<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Reading<\/td><td>7<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Writing<\/td><td>6<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This candidate <strong>does not meet the French-language category requirement<\/strong>, because writing is below NCLC 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The requirement applies to <strong>each skill individually<\/strong>. An overall average of NCLC 7 is not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-do-you-need-a-specific-occupation-for-the-french-category\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do You Need a Specific Occupation for the French Category?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. This is one of the main differences between the French category and occupation-based categories such as Healthcare, STEM, Trades, Education and Transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is <strong>no separate NOC occupation list for the French-language proficiency category<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could potentially work in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Finance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engineering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Information technology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Healthcare<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marketing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skilled trades<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another qualifying field<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and still be selected under the French category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this does <strong>not<\/strong> mean every occupation qualifies for Express Entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your work experience must still satisfy the rules of the Express Entry program through which you enter the pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-do-you-need-canadian-work-experience\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do You Need Canadian Work Experience?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French-language category itself does not require Canadian work experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes it different from several new 2026 categories, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Physicians with Canadian work experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Senior managers with Canadian work experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researchers with Canadian work experience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A candidate living outside Canada can potentially qualify for a French category-based draw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the candidate still needs to qualify for an underlying Express Entry program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, someone relying on the Federal Skilled Worker Program may use qualifying foreign work experience to become eligible for Express Entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image id=\"h-which-french-tests-does-express-entry-accept\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which French Tests Does Express Entry Accept?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IRCC currently accepts two French-language tests for Express Entry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>TEF Canada \u2014 Test d\u2019\u00e9valuation de fran\u00e7ais<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TCF Canada \u2014 Test de connaissance du fran\u00e7ais<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other French examinations should not automatically be treated as substitutes for TEF Canada or TCF Canada when creating an Express Entry profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The test must be an IRCC-approved test for Express Entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-tef-canada-score-do-you-need-for-nclc-7\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What TEF Canada Score Do You Need for NCLC 7?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IRCC converts TEF Canada results into NCLC levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Express Entry, IRCC currently instructs TEF candidates to use the <strong>\u201c\u00c9quivalence ancien score\u201d<\/strong> values when entering results into the Express Entry system rather than the newer <code>\/699<\/code> raw-score column shown on some TEF result documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minimum equivalency for <strong>NCLC 7<\/strong> is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>TEF Canada \u00e9crite<\/td><td>310\u2013348<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scores above these ranges can correspond to NCLC 8, 9 or higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important point for the French Express Entry category is that you need <strong>NCLC 7 or above in every skill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-tcf-canada-score-do-you-need-for-nclc-7\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What TCF Canada Score Do You Need for NCLC 7?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For TCF Canada, the current IRCC conversion table gives the following NCLC 7 ranges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>TCF Canada Ability<\/th><th>NCLC 7 simply an average score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-tef-canada-vs-tcf-canada-for-express-entry\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">TEF Canada vs TCF Canada for Express Entry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both are accepted by IRCC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no separate category preference for candidates who take TEF Canada instead of TCF class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The better test for a candidate is usually the one that suits their language-testing strengths, availability and preparation strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From an immigration perspective, the key result is the <strong>NCLC level<\/strong>, not whether you used TEF Canada or TCF Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-long-are-french-language-test-results-valid\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Long Are French Language Test Results Valid?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This point can cause serious problems if it is overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Express Entry, language test results must be <strong>less than two years old<\/strong> when you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>complete your Express Entry profile, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>submit your permanent residence application.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your results expire before you submit your permanent residence application, IRCC warns that an application submitted with expired language results can be refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-french-can-increase-your-crs-score\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How French Can Increase Your CRS Score<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">French can help your Express Entry profile separately from category-based selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the current CRS rules, a candidate with <strong>NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities<\/strong> can receive additional CRS points for French skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amount depends partly on the candidate&#8217;s English results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>French<\/th><th>English<\/th><th>Additional CRS Points<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>NCLC 7+ ways<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-benefit-1-crs-points\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8211; Benefit 1: CRS Points<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">French can contribute to your language score and may provide <strong>25 or 50 additional CRS points<\/strong>, depending on your English results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-benefit-2-french-category-eligibility\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8211; Benefit 2: French Category Eligibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reaching NCLC 7 in all four French abilities may also make you eligible to be considered in French-language category-based rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are related but separate mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-can-you-qualify-for-more-than-one-express-entry-category\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can You Qualify for More Than One Express Entry Category?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Express Entry categories are not necessarily mutually exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A French-speaking candidate may also have qualifying experience in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/express-entry\/healthcare-social-services-occupations\/\">Healthcare and social services<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/express-entry\/express-entry-stem-occupations\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/express-entry\/express-entry-stem-occupations\/\">STEM<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trades<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IRCC specifically notes that a candidate can be eligible for more than one category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-example-0\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-aca6856e wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"background-color:#ddedec;padding-top:16px;padding-right:16px;padding-bottom:16px;padding-left:16px\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A registered nurse could have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NCLC 7+ French results, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>qualifying nursing experience under the Healthcare and Social Services category.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That profile may therefore meet the conditions of both the <strong>French-language proficiency category<\/strong> and the <strong>Healthcare and Social Services category<\/strong>, assuming all other requirements are met.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean the candidate receives two invitations.
