Candidates need at least 12 months of qualifying full-time work experience, or an equivalent amount of part-time experience, within the previous three years in one eligible occupation. The experience does not need to be continuous and may have been gained in Canada or abroad.

As of September 14, 2026, IRCC has held one dedicated Trade occupations draw this year. On April 2, 2026, Canada issued 3,000 invitations with a CRS cut-off of 477.

The practical questions are therefore:

Is your exact NOC on the current list?
Can your foreign experience count?
Do you need a job offer or Canadian trade certificate?
Does your trade qualify under FSTP—or only under the Trade category?
And is your CRS competitive enough once you enter the pool?

<h2 2026?

The current list is not identical to the 2025 list.

Two changes are especially relevant.

Cooks Are No Longer Included

In 2025:

Cooks — NOC 63200

were included in the Trade occupations category.

They are not on the current 2026 list.

This matters because older pages and search results may still show cooks as eligible.

IRCC’s 2025 official list included cooks, while the current 2026 table does not.

A cook should therefore not rely on an older article simply because it still ranks in Google.

Butchers Are Now in the Trade Category

Butchers – retail and wholesale — NOC 63201

are currently included under Trade occupations.

In the official 2025 category list, butchers were under Agriculture and Agri-food, not Trades. Agriculture and agri-food is no longer one of the current 2026 Express Entry categories, while butchers now appear in the Trade table.

This is a good example of why the NOC list needs to be checked against the current IRCC page each year.

Trade Category and Federal Skilled Trades Program Are Not the Same Thing

This distinction solves one of the biggest sources of confusion for trade workers.

The names sound similar:

Trade Occupations Category

and

Federal Skilled Trades Program

but they serve different purposes.

Trade Occupations Category

The Trade category determines whether IRCC can identify you for a category-based Express Entry round.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

FSTP is one of the actual federal immigration programs that can make you eligible to enter the Express Entry pool.

You can therefore be eligible for the Trade category without necessarily qualifying under FSTP.

And you do not have to use FSTP simply because your occupation is on the Trade category list.

You may enter the Express Entry pool through:

Federal Skilled Worker Program

Canadian Experience Class

Federal Skilled Trades Program

and still potentially qualify for a Trade category round if your work experience meets the category requirements.

A Trade NOC Can Qualify for the Category but Not for FSTP

This is where the distinction becomes practical.

The current Trade category includes:

Construction managers — NOC 70010

and:

Home building and renovation managers — NOC 70011

These are TEER 0 management occupations.

FSTP, however, is based on specific skilled-trade NOC groups. The current federal rules cover designated groups within TEER 2 and TEER 3, including Major Groups 72, 73, 82, 83, 92 and 93, with specified exclusions, plus Minor Group 6320 and Unit Group 62200.

That means:

Trade category eligibility does not automatically equal FSTP eligibility.

A construction manager could potentially qualify for the Trade category while entering Express Entry through another program, such as FSWP or CEC.

The same issue can arise with:

Construction estimators — NOC 22303

which are included in the Trade category but are not simply made FSTP-eligible because IRCC placed them in a category called “Trades.”

Do You Need a Job Offer for Trade Category Express Entry?

Not because of the Trade category itself.

IRCC’s category requirements do not say that every Trade candidate needs a Canadian job offer.

The confusion usually comes from the Federal Skilled Trades Program.

Under FSTP, a candidate generally needs either:

a valid full-time job offer for at least one year

or:

a certificate of qualification in the skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority.

That is an FSTP program requirement, not a general Trade category requirement.

Example:

Consider an electrician abroad.

They may have:

NOC 72200;

two years of qualifying foreign experience;

no Canadian job offer;

no Canadian certificate of qualification.

Their occupation may satisfy the Trade category occupation requirement.

But whether they can enter Express Entry through FSTP is a separate question.

If the same person qualifies under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, for example, they may potentially enter the Express Entry pool through FSWP and still be identified as Trade-category eligible.

This distinction should be checked before assuming that “no Canadian job offer” means “no Trade category.”

Which Express Entry Program Can a Trade Worker Use?

The correct program depends on the actual profile.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

FSTP may be useful for candidates whose experience falls within the program’s designated skilled trade groups and who meet its work experience, language, job-offer or certificate-of-qualification requirements.

FSTP requires at least two years of qualifying full-time skilled trade experience, or 3,120 hours, within the five years before applying.

Notice that this is different from the Trade category’s rule:

Trade category: 12 months within 3 years.

FSTP: 2 years within 5 years.

You may therefore satisfy one test without satisfying the other.

Federal Skilled Worker Program

A trades worker with qualifying foreign skilled work experience may instead qualify through FSWP if they meet its requirements, including language, skilled work and the FSW selection criteria.

Canadian Experience Class

A trade worker who has obtained qualifying skilled work experience in Canada may potentially qualify through CEC.

Language requirements also differ depending on the underlying program.

IRCC currently requires:

Express Entry Program

Basic Language Rule

FSWP

CLB 7

CEC — TEER 0 or 1

CLB 7

CEC — TEER 2 or 3

CLB a separate universal language score for all trade workers.

Can Foreign Trade Experience Qualify?

Yes.

The Trade category accepts qualifying experience obtained:

in Canada or abroad.

Canadian work experience is not required.

This makes the category relevant to tradespeople outside Canada, including electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters, HVAC mechanics and other workers on the eligible NOC list.

But foreign experience still has to be genuine qualifying work under the correct NOC.

Example: Electrician Outside Canada

A candidate has:

NOC 72200 — Electricians

and 20 months of recent qualifying experience outside Canada.

That may satisfy the category’s work-experience requirement.

The person must still establish eligibility for an Express Entry program and enter the pool.

Example: Construction Manager Abroad

A construction manager with NOC 70010 and 18 experience no longer needs to be continuous in 2026.

That means a break between jobs does not automatically destroy eligibility, provided the qualifying experience adds up properly within the three-year period and remains in the same eligible occupation.

Changing Employers Does Not Automatically Reset the Clock

Some tradespeople assume the 12 months must all come from one employer.

The IRCC category rule refers to experience in one occupation, not one employer.

For example:

6 months as NOC 72300 plumber with Employer A

plus:

8 months as NOC 72300 plumber with Employer B

may potentially satisfy the 12-month category requirement, assuming the work genuinely matches the same NOC and all other requirements are met.

The key issue is whether both jobs actually belong to the same eligible occupation.

Your Trade Does Not Have to Be Your Primary Express Entry Occupation

IRCC states that the qualifying experience may be in a listed Trade occupation regardless of your primary occupation.

Consider someone who has:

several years in another skilled occupation used as their primary Express Entry occupation; and

15 months of recent eligible work as a carpenter under NOC 72310.

That carpenter experience could potentially establish Trade-category eligibility even if carpentry is not the primary occupation used elsewhere in the Express Entry profile.

The underlying program eligibility still needs to be valid.

Job Titles Can Be Misleading in the Trades

NOC classification should not be based on the title printed on an employment letter alone.

Consider a title such as:

Maintenance Technician

That could potentially describe work performed by:

an industrial mechanic;

an electrical mechanic;

an HVAC mechanic;

another technical trade;

or an occupation not currently included at all.

The correct NOC depends on the duties.

The same issue arises with titles such as:

Technician
Mechanic
Supervisor
Installer
Construction Specialist
Maintenance Worker

If you choose an eligible NOC because the title sounds similar but your actual duties belong elsewhere, the category claim may not hold up when IRCC reviews the application.

Check the Lead Statement and Main Duties Before Choosing Your NOC

For the Federal Skilled Trades Program, IRCC explicitly requires candidates to show that they performed the actions in the NOC lead statement and most of the main duties of the occupation.

Even outside FSTP, using a defensible NOC is critical to an Express Entry work-experience claim.

A useful process is:

actual job duties → possible NOC → lead statement → main duties → current Trade list

Do not reverse the process by starting with the list of eligible NOCs and trying to make your job fit one of them.

Does a Foreign Trade Licence Automatically Work in Canada?

No.

Immigration eligibility and trade certification are separate issues.

Some trades are regulated or compulsory-certified in particular provinces or territories, while rules can differ across Canada.

A person may potentially satisfy Express Entry category requirements using qualifying foreign experience without automatically receiving permission to practise a regulated trade in every province.

This becomes especially important if you intend to use a Canadian certificate of qualification to qualify under FSTP.

A certificate of qualification confirms that a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority has assessed the person as qualified to work in the skilled trade.

It is different from simply holding a foreign trade licence or foreign apprenticeship certificate.

Construction Managers and Estimators Should Not Assume They Need Trade Certification

The presence of occupations such as:

Construction managers — NOC 70010

and:

Construction estimators — NOC 22303

is another reason not to treat the Trade category as a synonym for apprenticeship-based trades.

The category includes occupations with very different training and professional structures.

A construction manager should assess:

correct NOC;

Express Entry program eligibility;

12-month category experience;

CRS;

rather than assuming that they must obtain the same trade certification required of an electrician or plumber under another immigration pathway.

Cooks: What to Do If You Planned Around the Old Trade List

If your occupation is:

NOC 63200 — Cooks

the important update is simple:

Cooks were on the 2025 Trade list but are not on the current 2026 list.

That does not automatically mean you cannot use Express Entry.

It means that your occupation no longer gives you eligibility for the current Trade category-based selection.

You should separately check whether you qualify under:

Federal Skilled Worker Program;

Canadian Experience Class;

Federal Skilled Trades Program;

a provincial nominee pathway;

or another Express Entry category you genuinely meet.

If you also have NCLC 7 French, for example, your occupation does not need to appear on the French-language category list because that category is language-based rather than occupation-based.

The important response to removal from a category is to reassess the immigration route—not to change the NOC to something that does not match your actual work.

Butchers: What Changed for NOC 63201?

Butchers – retail and wholesale — NOC 63201 are currently included in the 2026 Trade category.

This occupation appeared under Agriculture and Agri-food in the official 2025 categories.

For a butcher, this means older content may place the occupation under the wrong category for 2026.

The current IRCC table should control your assessment.

NOC 63201 is also especially interesting because Minor Group 6320 falls within the current Federal Skilled Trades Program occupational framework.

That does not remove the rest of the FSTP requirements, but it means a butcher should assess both:

Trade category eligibility

and:

FSTP program eligibility

rather than assuming they are the same test.

Latest Trade Express Entry Draws

Dedicated Trade draws have not followed a fixed schedule.

<p at CRS 505.

IRCC’s official 2024 year-end report confirms that Trade category cut-offs that year ranged from 433 to 436.

What This Tells You

A historical score is useful context, but it is not a target that IRCC promises to repeat.

The recent Trade CRS has ranged from the low 430s to above 500.

That is too wide a range to build a plan around statements such as:

“Trades only need CRS 430.”

or:

“You need at least CRS 505.”

Neither statement is reliable as a permanent rule.

If Your CRS Is Below 477, Do Not Assume the Trade Route Is Closed

The April 2026 cut-off was 477.

That does not make 477 a permanent requirement.

Future results depend on:

how many Trade candidates are in the pool;

their CRS distribution;

the size of the draw;

IRCC’s selection priorities;

and whether eligible Trade candidates are invited through other round types.

IRCC explicitly says it may not need a dedicated category-based round when enough category-eligible candidates are already being invited through general or program-specific rounds.

So assess your CRS in the context of your full profile rather than assuming a category-specific invitation is the only possible route.

A Practical Assessment for Trade Workers Outside Canada

For a tradesperson abroad, a useful sequence is:

Step 1 — Identify your correct NOC

Do this from the actual duties, not the occupational title you prefer.

Step 2 — Check the current 25-NOC Trade list

Do not rely on the 2024 or 2025 list.

Step 3 — Confirm 12 months in that same occupation during the last three years

The experience may be interrupted but must add up within one eligible NOC.

Step 4 — Determine which Express Entry program you can actually use

This may be FSWP, FSTP or, if you later obtain qualifying Canadian experience, CEC.

Step 5 — Check whether FSTP creates additional requirements

If you are relying on FSTP, look specifically at its two-year experience requirement and its job-offer/certificate-of-qualification rules.

Step 6 — Calculate CRS

Trade-category eligibility does not replace CRS ranking.

Step 7 — Check other categories you may independently qualify for

French or another occupational category can create an additional selection route.

Real Problems Trade Candidates Run Into

Your Occupation Sounds Like a Trade but Is Not on the List

This happens frequently.

For example, automotive service technicians, truck and bus mechanics, and mechanical repairers — NOC 72410 are not currently in the Trade category.

They are in the Transport occupations category for 2026.

Similarly, aircraft mechanics are currently in Transport rather than Trades.

The everyday meaning of “trade” is therefore not enough to determine the Express Entry category.

You Have Enough Total Experience but Not in One NOC

Nine months as a carpenter plus five months as a plumber gives you more than 12 months of trade work.

It does not automatically give you 12 months in one qualifying occupation.

Your Old Article Says Six Months Is Enough

That is outdated for 2026.

The renewed occupational categories now require 12 months.

You Think FSTP Is Mandatory

It is not.

A category-eligible Trade candidate may enter Express Entry through another eligible federal program.

You Think a Job Offer Is Mandatory for Every Trade Candidate

That confuses the Trade category with FSTP.

The category itself does not impose a universal Canadian job-offer requirement.

You Have a Foreign Trade Certificate and Assume It Equals a Canadian Certificate of Qualification

It does not automatically do so.

The Canadian certificate used for FSTP is issued by the relevant Canadian authority after its own assessment process.

Your Employer’s Title Does Not Match a Canadian NOC Name

That is not automatically a problem.

The more important issue is whether your actual duties match the correct Canadian NOC.

<h2 id="h-related-express-entry-categories-to-compare" IRCC issued 3,000 ITAs at CRS 477.

Conclusion

While Canada’s demand for skilled trades remains high, securing an invitation in 2026 comes down to how accurately your profile aligns with Express Entry rules. Success requires looking beyond general demand and focusing on exact eligibility criteria.

Keep these key distinctions in mind as you finalize your strategy:

Category vs. Program Eligibility: Do not mix up qualifying for a targeted Trade draw with meeting the baseline requirements to enter the Express Entry pool.

Work Experience Flexibility: You need 12 months of recent experience in an eligible NOC code, and foreign experience is fully accepted. A Canadian job offer, local experience, or trade certificate are not mandatory just to qualify for the Trade category itself—though they may be required if you rely on specific base programs like the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).

NOC Misconceptions: Double-check your occupation. Automotive mechanics are currently classified under Transport, cooks are no longer on the list, and construction managers are included despite not fitting traditional apprenticeship models.

Strategic Roadmap for 2026

To maximize your chances of success, follow this step-by-step sequence:

Verify Your NOC Code: Ensure your actual job duties match the official description.

Confirm Category Inclusion: Check that your NOC is on the active Trade category list.

Validate 12-Month Experience: Meet the minimum threshold of continuous recent work.

Establish Base Pool Eligibility: Secure your spot in the pool via FSWP, CEC, or FSTP.

Optimize Your CRS Score: Work on boosting your points for competitive draw thresholds.

Prepare Backup Pathways: Explore Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) and alternative targeted categories.

Check whether your trade qualifies for Express Entry in 2026, how
