Canada’s Trade Occupations category<\/strong> is one of the Express Entry categories renewed for 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there are two points that skilled trades workers need to understand before using this category as an immigration strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, the Trade category is not the same thing as the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, not every job that people normally describe as a \u201cskilled trade\u201d is currently included in the Trade category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For 2026, IRCC lists 25 eligible NOC occupations<\/strong>. Candidates need at least 12 months of qualifying full-time work experience, or an equivalent amount of part-time experience, within the previous three years<\/strong> in one eligible occupation. The experience does not need to be continuous and may have been gained in Canada or abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 14, 2026, IRCC has held one dedicated Trade occupations draw this year. On April 2, 2026, Canada issued 3,000 invitations<\/strong> with a CRS cut-off of 477<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The practical questions are therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is your exact NOC on the current list?
Can your foreign experience count?
Do you need a job offer or Canadian trade certificate?
Does your trade qualify under FSTP\u2014or only under the Trade category?
And is your CRS competitive enough once you enter the pool?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IRCC states that the required experience must be accumulated in one eligible occupation<\/strong>, regardless of your primary occupation, and may be obtained either in Canada or abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the current IRCC Trade occupations table for 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Changed in the Trade Category for 2026?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The current list is not identical to the 2025 list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two changes are especially relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cooks Are No Longer Included<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2025:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cooks \u2014 NOC 63200<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

were included in the Trade occupations category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are not on the current 2026 list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This matters because older pages and search results may still show cooks as eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IRCC’s 2025 official list included cooks, while the current 2026 table does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A cook should therefore not rely on an older article simply because it still ranks in Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Butchers Are Now in the Trade Category<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Butchers \u2013 retail and wholesale \u2014 NOC 63201<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

are currently included under Trade occupations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the official 2025 category list, butchers were under Agriculture and Agri-food<\/strong>, not Trades. Agriculture and agri-food is no longer one of the current 2026 Express Entry categories, while butchers now appear in the Trade table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a good example of why the NOC list needs to be checked against the current IRCC page each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trade Category and Federal Skilled Trades Program Are Not the Same Thing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This distinction solves one of the biggest sources of confusion for trade workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The names sound similar:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trade Occupations Category<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federal Skilled Trades Program<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

but they serve different purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trade Occupations Category<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Trade category determines whether IRCC can identify you for a category-based Express Entry round<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federal Skilled Trades Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

FSTP is one of the actual federal immigration programs that can make you eligible to enter the Express Entry pool<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can therefore be eligible for the Trade category without necessarily qualifying under FSTP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you do not<\/strong> have to use FSTP simply because your occupation is on the Trade category list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may enter the Express Entry pool through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Canadian Experience Class<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    and still potentially qualify for a Trade category round if your work experience meets the category requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Trade NOC Can Qualify for the Category but Not for FSTP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    This is where the distinction becomes practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The current Trade category includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Construction managers \u2014 NOC 70010<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Home building and renovation managers \u2014 NOC 70011<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    These are TEER 0 management occupations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    FSTP, however, is based on specific skilled-trade NOC groups. The current federal rules cover designated groups within TEER 2 and TEER 3, including Major Groups 72, 73, 82, 83, 92 and 93, with specified exclusions, plus Minor Group 6320 and Unit Group 62200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Trade category eligibility does not automatically equal FSTP eligibility.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A construction manager could potentially qualify for the Trade category while entering Express Entry through another program, such as FSWP or CEC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The same issue can arise with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Construction estimators \u2014 NOC 22303<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    which are included in the Trade category but are not simply made FSTP-eligible because IRCC placed them in a category called \u201cTrades.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Do You Need a Job Offer for Trade Category Express Entry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Not because of the Trade category itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    IRCC’s category requirements do not say that every Trade candidate needs a Canadian job offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The confusion usually comes from the Federal Skilled Trades Program<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Under FSTP, a candidate generally needs either:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    a valid full-time job offer for at least one year<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    a certificate of qualification in the skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That is an FSTP program requirement<\/strong>, not a general Trade category requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Example:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Consider an electrician abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They may have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • NOC 72200;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • two years of qualifying foreign experience;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • no Canadian job offer;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • no Canadian certificate of qualification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Their occupation may satisfy the Trade category occupation requirement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But whether they can enter Express Entry through FSTP is a separate question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If the same person qualifies under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, for example, they may potentially enter the Express Entry pool through FSWP and still be identified as Trade-category eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This distinction should be checked before assuming that \u201cno Canadian job offer\u201d means \u201cno Trade category.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Which Express Entry Program Can a Trade Worker Use?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The correct program depends on the actual profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Federal Skilled Trades Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      FSTP may be useful for candidates whose experience falls within the program’s designated skilled trade groups and who meet its work experience, language, job-offer or certificate-of-qualification requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      FSTP requires at least two years of qualifying full-time skilled trade experience, or 3,120 hours, within the five years before applying<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Notice that this is different from the Trade category’s rule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Trade category:<\/strong> 12 months within 3 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      FSTP:<\/strong> 2 years within 5 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You may therefore satisfy one test without satisfying the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Federal Skilled Worker Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      A trades worker with qualifying foreign skilled work experience may instead qualify through FSWP if they meet its requirements, including language, skilled work and the FSW selection criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Canadian Experience Class<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      A trade worker who has obtained qualifying skilled work experience in Canada may potentially qualify through CEC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Language requirements also differ depending on the underlying program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      IRCC currently requires:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Express Entry Program<\/th>Basic Language Rule<\/th><\/tr><\/thead>
      FSWP<\/td>CLB 7<\/td><\/tr>

      The category itself does not create a separate universal language score for all trade workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Can Foreign Trade Experience Qualify?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The Trade category accepts qualifying experience obtained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      in Canada or abroad.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Canadian work experience is not required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This makes the category relevant to tradespeople outside Canada, including electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters, HVAC mechanics and other workers on the eligible NOC list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      But foreign experience still has to be genuine qualifying work under the correct NOC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Example: Electrician Outside Canada<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      A candidate has:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      NOC 72200 \u2014 Electricians<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      and 20 months of recent qualifying experience outside Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That may satisfy the category’s work-experience requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The person must still establish eligibility for an Express Entry program and enter the pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Example: Construction Manager Abroad<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      A construction manager with NOC 70010 and 18 months of recent foreign experience may also potentially satisfy the category requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The person does not need to qualify through FSTP simply because the page is called Trade occupations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \"Trade<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

      Your 12 Months Must Be in One Eligible Occupation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      IRCC requires the qualifying category experience to be in a single occupation listed in the Trade table<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This creates some situations worth checking carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The experience no longer needs to be continuous in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That means a break between jobs does not automatically destroy eligibility, provided the qualifying experience adds up properly within the three-year period and remains in the same eligible occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Changing Employers Does Not Automatically Reset the Clock<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Some tradespeople assume the 12 months must all come from one employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The IRCC category rule refers to experience in one occupation<\/strong>, not one employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      6 months as NOC 72300 plumber with Employer A<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      plus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      8 months as NOC 72300 plumber with Employer B<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      may potentially satisfy the 12-month category requirement, assuming the work genuinely matches the same NOC and all other requirements are met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The key issue is whether both jobs actually belong to the same eligible occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Your Trade Does Not Have to Be Your Primary Express Entry Occupation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      IRCC states that the qualifying experience may be in a listed Trade occupation regardless of your primary occupation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Consider someone who has:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • several years in another skilled occupation used as their primary Express Entry occupation; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • 15 months of recent eligible work as a carpenter under NOC 72310.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        That carpenter experience could potentially establish Trade-category eligibility even if carpentry is not the primary occupation used elsewhere in the Express Entry profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The underlying program eligibility still needs to be valid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Job Titles Can Be Misleading in the Trades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        NOC classification should not be based on the title printed on an employment letter alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Consider a title such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Maintenance Technician<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        That could potentially describe work performed by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        • an industrial mechanic;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • an electrical mechanic;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • an HVAC mechanic;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • another technical trade;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • or an occupation not currently included at all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          The correct NOC depends on the duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The same issue arises with titles such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Technician<\/strong>
          Mechanic<\/strong>
          Supervisor<\/strong>
          Installer<\/strong>
          Construction Specialist<\/strong>
          Maintenance Worker<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          If you choose an eligible NOC because the title sounds similar but your actual duties belong elsewhere, the category claim may not hold up when IRCC reviews the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Check the Lead Statement and Main Duties Before Choosing Your NOC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          For the Federal Skilled Trades Program, IRCC explicitly requires candidates to show that they performed the actions in the NOC lead statement and most of the main duties<\/strong> of the occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Even outside FSTP, using a defensible NOC is critical to an Express Entry work-experience claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          A useful process is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          actual job duties \u2192 possible NOC \u2192 lead statement \u2192 main duties \u2192 current Trade list<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Do not reverse the process by starting with the list of eligible NOCs and trying to make your job fit one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Does a Foreign Trade Licence Automatically Work in Canada?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Immigration eligibility and trade certification are separate issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Some trades are regulated or compulsory-certified in particular provinces or territories, while rules can differ across Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          A person may potentially satisfy Express Entry category requirements using qualifying foreign experience without automatically receiving permission to practise a regulated trade in every province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          This becomes especially important if you intend to use a Canadian certificate of qualification<\/strong> to qualify under FSTP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          A certificate of qualification confirms that a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority has assessed the person as qualified to work in the skilled trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          It is different from simply holding a foreign trade licence or foreign apprenticeship certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Construction Managers and Estimators Should Not Assume They Need Trade Certification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          The presence of occupations such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Construction managers \u2014 NOC 70010<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Construction estimators \u2014 NOC 22303<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          is another reason not to treat the Trade category as a synonym for apprenticeship-based trades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The category includes occupations with very different training and professional structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          A construction manager should assess:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \n
          • correct NOC;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Express Entry program eligibility;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • 12-month category experience;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • CRS;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            rather than assuming that they must obtain the same trade certification required of an electrician or plumber under another immigration pathway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Cooks: What to Do If You Planned Around the Old Trade List<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            If your occupation is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            NOC 63200 \u2014 Cooks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            the important update is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Cooks were on the 2025 Trade list but are not on the current 2026 list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            That does not<\/strong> automatically mean you cannot use Express Entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            It means that your occupation no longer gives you eligibility for the current Trade category-based selection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            You should separately check whether you qualify under:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              \n
            • Federal Skilled Worker Program;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Canadian Experience Class;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • Federal Skilled Trades Program;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • a provincial nominee pathway;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • or another Express Entry category you genuinely meet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              If you also have NCLC 7 French, for example, your occupation does not need to appear on the French-language category list because that category is language-based rather than occupation-based.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              The important response to removal from a category is to reassess the immigration route\u2014not to change the NOC to something that does not match your actual work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Butchers: What Changed for NOC 63201?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

              Butchers \u2013 retail and wholesale \u2014 NOC 63201<\/strong> are currently included in the 2026 Trade category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              This occupation appeared under Agriculture and Agri-food in the official 2025 categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              For a butcher, this means older content may place the occupation under the wrong category for 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              The current IRCC table should control your assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
