{"id":5797,"date":"2026-09-23T18:08:12","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T18:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/?p=5797"},"modified":"2026-09-28T15:25:48","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T15:25:48","slug":"transport-occupations-category","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/express-entry\/transport-occupations-category\/","title":{"rendered":"Transport Occupations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite its name, the 2026 Transport category covers only four occupations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only four NOCs are currently included, and three of them are connected to aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fourth covers automotive service technicians and mechanics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truck drivers, transportation managers, air traffic controllers, railway workers, marine officers and logistics workers are not on the current list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes checking the exact NOC particularly important for this category. Someone who has worked in transportation for ten years may still be ineligible, while a truck mechanic can qualify even though a truck driver cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IRCC introduced the current Transport category for 2026 as part of its category-based Express Entry selection. Candidates need at least 12 months of qualifying work experience within the previous three years in one listed occupation. But Automotive service technicians, truck and bus mechanics, and mechanical repairers (NOC 72410) are included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These occupations sound related, but they are completely different NOCs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person who drives commercial trucks should not choose NOC 72410 because the title contains the word \u201ctruck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOC 72410 covers people who inspect, diagnose, service and repair motor vehicles, buses and commercial transport trucks. Job Bank describes the occupation as mechanical repair and servicing work involving systems such as engines, brakes, steering, electrical components and drivetrains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your job is driving the vehicle rather than maintaining and repairing it, this NOC is unlikely to describe your work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-does-foreign-experience-count\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does Foreign Experience Count?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Transport category does not require Canadian experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pilot, aircraft mechanic, avionics technician or automotive mechanic who has never worked in Canada can still potentially meet the category requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IRCC accepts qualifying experience gained <strong>in Canada or abroad<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For someone outside Canada, the bigger question is usually whether they can also qualify for an underlying Express Entry program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many applicants with foreign skilled work experience, that may mean assessing eligibility under the <strong>Federal Skilled Worker Program<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person already working in Canada may instead qualify through the <strong>Canadian Experience Class<\/strong>, depending on the profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Transport category itself does not replace either program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-can-you-combine-different-nocs\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can You Combine Different NOCs?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current rule is cumulative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The qualifying experience does not need to be continuous, but it must add up to at least 12 months within the previous three years in one listed occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few examples make this clearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-white-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:16px;padding-right:16px;padding-bottom:16px;padding-left:16px\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" src=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/step-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1287\" style=\"width:68px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-aircraft-mechanic-with-a-break-in-employment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aircraft mechanic with a break in employment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone worked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>seven months as NOC 72404;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>took a five-month break;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>returned for another eight months in NOC 72404.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The break does not automatically prevent the experience from qualifying. Both periods may potentially be combined because the experience does not need to be continuous.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#f6f6f6;padding-top:16px;padding-right:16px;padding-bottom:16px;padding-left:16px\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" src=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/step-2.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1288\" style=\"width:68px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-pilot-and-aircraft-mechanic-experience\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pilot and aircraft mechanic experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone has:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>eight months as a pilot under NOC 72600;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>six months as an aircraft mechanic under NOC 72404.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both occupations are eligible, but they are different NOCs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not simply add them together to claim 14 months under one Transport occupation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#ddedec;padding-top:16px;padding-right:16px;padding-bottom:16px;padding-left:16px\">\n<h3 id=\"h-same-occupation-different-employers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Same occupation, different employers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mechanic has:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>five months in NOC 72410 with one garage;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>nine months in NOC 72410 with another employer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changing employers is not, by itself, the problem. The relevant question is whether both periods genuinely belong to the same eligible NOC and otherwise meet the requirements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-do-pilots-need-a-canadian-licence\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Pilots Need a Canadian Licence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foreign pilots have two separate issues to deal with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can your flying experience qualify for immigration? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you legally operate an aircraft in Canada?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Transport-category eligibility, foreign work experience under <strong>NOC 72600<\/strong> can count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For actually flying Canadian-registered aircraft, Transport Canada licensing rules apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transport Canada states that foreign pilots who want to fly in Canada can either pursue an appropriate Canadian licence or, in some situations, obtain a Foreign Licence Validation Certificate. Foreign training and experience may receive credit depending on the licence and country involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a foreign commercial pilot seeking a Canadian commercial licence may need to satisfy Canadian requirements involving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>medical certification;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>flight experience;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>written examinations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and applicable skill requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A foreign pilot&#8217;s immigration eligibility should therefore not be read as confirmation that they can immediately take a flying job after arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-can-u-s-pilots-convert-their-licence\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can U.S. Pilots Convert Their Licence?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a specific licensing agreement between Canada and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transport Canada states that eligible FAA certificate holders may convert certain U.S. pilot credentials to Canadian licences through the FAA\u2013TCCA Implementation Procedures for Licensing agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That arrangement does not apply automatically to every foreign licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pilots licensed elsewhere need to look at the rules Transport Canada applies to their particular credentials and experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is employment licensing\u2014not a separate Express Entry requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Aircraft-mechanics-aircraft-inspectors-Transport-Category-1024x600.webp\" alt=\"Aircraft-mechanics-aircraft-inspectors-Transport-Category\" class=\"wp-image-5836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Aircraft-mechanics-aircraft-inspectors-Transport-Category-1024x600.webp 1024w, https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Aircraft-mechanics-aircraft-inspectors-Transport-Category-300x176.webp 300w, https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Aircraft-mechanics-aircraft-inspectors-Transport-Category-768x450.webp 768w, https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Aircraft-mechanics-aircraft-inspectors-Transport-Category.webp 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-do-aircraft-mechanics-need-an-ame-licence\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Aircraft Mechanics Need an AME Licence?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aircraft mechanics and aircraft inspectors (NOC 72404) are eligible for the Transport category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, foreign experience can potentially satisfy the immigration requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Canadian aircraft maintenance licensing has its own rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transport Canada issues Aircraft Maintenance Engineer licences and states clearly that <strong>there is no automatic conversion of foreign aircraft maintenance licences<\/strong>. Applicants must meet Canada&#8217;s initial licensing requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those requirements can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>acceptable basic training;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>aviation maintenance experience;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>maintenance task experience;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>technical or regulatory examinations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and supporting documentation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foreign training that has not previously been approved or accepted by Transport Canada can be reviewed when the individual applies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So an experienced aircraft mechanic abroad may be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>eligible to use foreign experience for the Express Entry Transport category<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">while still needing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Canadian AME licensing before exercising licensed maintenance privileges in Canada.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both statements can be true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-avionics-workers-should-check-noc-22313-carefully\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avionics Workers Should Check NOC 22313 Carefully<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current category also includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aircraft instrument, electrical and avionics mechanics, technicians and inspectors (NOC 22313)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This occupation was not part of the older Transport list shown in IRCC&#8217;s previous category report. It is part of the new 2026 list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is useful for candidates whose work is specifically on aircraft electrical, instrument or avionics systems rather than general mechanical aircraft maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should not be confused with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NOC 72404 &#8211; Aircraft mechanics and aircraft inspectors.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your background is somewhere between the two, the distinction should come from your actual duties and training, not from whichever NOC you would prefer to use for Express Entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-automotive-mechanics-are-in-transport-not-the-trade-category\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Automotive Mechanics Are in Transport, Not the Trade Category<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOC 72410 is another occupation that candidates can easily place in the wrong category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An automotive mechanic feels like an obvious skilled trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Express Entry category-based selection in 2026, however:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOC 72410 is listed under Transport occupations, not Trade occupations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not mean automotive service is no longer considered a trade in other Canadian systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Automotive Service Technician is a designated Red Seal trade, and provincial certification rules still apply independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOC 72410 is currently assigned to the Transport category even though automotive service is commonly considered a skilled trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-automotive-certification-depends-on-the-province\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Automotive Certification Depends on the Province<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foreign automotive experience can count for the Express Entry Transport category without first holding Canadian trade certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working in the occupation after arrival is a different question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Job Bank reports that trade certification for automotive service technicians is compulsory in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nova Scotia;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prince Edward Island;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New Brunswick;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ontario; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alberta.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is available but voluntary in several other provinces and territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mechanic choosing where to settle should therefore look at both immigration eligibility and the certification rules in that province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone who qualifies for permanent residence is not automatically exempt from provincial trade requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-first-2026-transport-draw-had-only-300-invitations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The First 2026 Transport Draw Had Only 300 Invitations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IRCC held the first dedicated round under the current Transport category on <strong>August 7, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Date<\/th><th>Invitations<\/th><th>CRS Cut-Off<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>August 7, 2026<\/td><td>300<\/td><td>470<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It remains the only dedicated Transport round under the current 2026 category as of September 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three hundred invitations is a relatively small draw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters when interpreting the CRS score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A cut-off of 470 does not mean that Transport applicants should treat 470 as a permanent threshold. and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>14 recent months as an automotive service technician under NOC 72410.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IRCC&#8217;s category rules allow qualifying experience in one Transport occupation <strong>regardless of the primary occupation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If those 14 months genuinely match NOC 72410 and fall within the required period, that work may potentially make the person Transport-category eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person would still need valid eligibility under one of the programs managed by Express Entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-are-transport-managers-still-eligible\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are Transport Managers Still Eligible?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Managers in transportation (NOC 70020) appeared in the earlier Transport category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does not appear on the current 2026 Transport table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A candidate working as a transportation manager should therefore not rely on an article that simply reproduces the 2023 or 2024 occupation list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the exact seniority and duties, some managers may need to investigate other Express Entry options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A genuinely senior executive with qualifying Canadian experience, for example, may need to review the separate <strong>Senior Managers with Canadian Work Experience<\/strong> category rather than assuming the Transport category applies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-logistics-and-supply-chain-roles-are-not-automatically-included\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Logistics and Supply Chain Roles Are Not Automatically Included<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another common misconception comes from treating an industry as though it were an occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>an airline;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a trucking company;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a freight forwarder;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a railway;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an airport;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a logistics provider;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">does not automatically make a person eligible for the Transport category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current category is based on four specific NOCs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A logistics coordinator, dispatcher, supply-chain specialist or operations employee should identify their actual NOC first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it is not one of the four codes, simply working in the transportation sector does not create Transport-category eligibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-if-you-were-a-truck-driver-under-the-old-category\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What If You Were a Truck Driver Under the Old Category?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your occupation is Transport truck driver (NOC 73300), the current situation is straightforward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the NOC is not on the 2026 Transport list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not mean you should leave the Express Entry pool if you otherwise qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means the current Transport category is not an additional selection route for you based on NOC 73300.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your actual options depend on the rest of the profile and may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>another Express Entry round type;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an eligible provincial nominee program;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>another category you independently qualify for;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or a different federal or provincial immigration pathway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What you should not do is classify driving experience as truck-mechanic experience simply because NOC 72410 remains on the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-french-can-create-a-separate-opportunity-for-transport-workers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">French Can Create a Separate Opportunity for Transport Workers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Express Entry categories are not mutually exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pilot or mechanic who also has qualifying French-language results may potentially meet both:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transport-category requirements and <a href=\"https:\/\/sugimotovisa.com\/en\/immigrate-to-canada\/express-entry\/french-language-proficiency\/\">French-language proficiency category<\/a> requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French category currently requires at least NCLC 7 in all four French abilities.
