Healthcare and Social Services Express Entry Category

Healthcare and Social Services

Check whether your healthcare or social services occupation qualifies for Express Entry in 2026, including current NOC codes, work experience rules and CRS draws.

If you have recent work experience as a nurse, physician, pharmacist, physiotherapist, psychologist, medical technician, social worker or in another eligible health-related occupation, you may qualify for Healthcare and Social Services category-based Express Entry draws.

But having a healthcare degree or job title is not enough.

For the 2026 category, IRCC requires at least 12 months of qualifying work experience within the last three years in one eligible NOC occupation. The experience can be gained in Canada or abroad, and it no longer has to be continuous.

There are currently 37 eligible NOC codes in this category.

As of September 10, 2026, IRCC has also held three Healthcare and Social Services category rounds this year, with CRS cut-offs between 467 and 475.

This page helps you answer the questions that matter:

  • Is your occupation on the current list?
  • Does foreign work experience count?
  • Can you combine experience from different healthcare jobs?
  • Does your healthcare occupation need to be your primary NOC?
  • Do you need a Canadian licence before entering Express Entry?
  • What CRS scores have healthcare draws required in 2026?
  • How is this category different from the separate physician category?

Latest Healthcare Express Entry Draws in 2026

Healthcare has been actively used for category-based invitations in 2026.

As of September 10, 2026:

DrawDateITAsCRS Cut-Off
#398February 20, 20264,000467
#422June 25, 20264,000475
#441September 4, 20263,500475
2026 total so far11,500467–475 range

The most recent healthcare round was held on September 4, 2026, when 3,500 candidates received invitations and the lowest CRS score invited was 475.

What Does a CRS of 475 Mean for You?

It does not mean that 475 is now the permanent minimum for healthcare candidates.

Each category-based round has its own CRS cut-off depending on:

  • how many eligible healthcare candidates are in the pool;
  • their CRS scores;
  • how many invitations IRCC decides to issue; and
  • the timing and type of future rounds.

A candidate at CRS 470, for example, would not have qualified in the June or September 2026 healthcare rounds, but would have been above the February 2026 cut-off of 467.

Past cut-offs are useful for understanding the recent competitive range. They are not a prediction of the next draw.

Who Qualifies for the Healthcare and Social Services Category?

There are two separate tests.

You Must First Qualify for Express Entry

You must be eligible for at least one of the three programs managed through Express Entry:

Then you must create an Express Entry profile and enter the pool.

You Must Meet the Healthcare Category Rule

Within the three years before the relevant assessment point, you need at least:

12 months of full-time work experience or an equal amount of part-time experience

in:

one eligible Healthcare and Social Services NOC

The experience:

  • does not need to be continuous;
  • may be gained in Canada or abroad;
  • does not have to be in your primary occupation.

Your Healthcare NOC Does Not Have to Be Your Primary Occupation

IRCC specifically states that qualifying healthcare work may be in a listed occupation “no matter your primary occupation.”

Example

Assume you have:

  • three years of skilled work experience in another occupation that you use as your primary Express Entry occupation; and
  • 14 months of recent qualifying experience as a social worker under NOC 41300.

If the social worker experience meets the category requirements, it may make you eligible for the Healthcare and Social Services category even though NOC 41300 is not your primary occupation.

You still need to satisfy the requirements of the Express Entry program through which you entered the pool.

This is different from assuming that the category occupation and primary occupation must always be identical.

Can You Combine Two Healthcare Occupations to Reach 12 Months?

This is where the wording of the current rule matters.

IRCC requires the qualifying work experience to be accumulated in a single occupation listed in the healthcare table.

For example:

Recent ExperienceMeets the Category’s 12-Month Rule?
12 months as an RN, NOC 31301Potentially yes
14 months as a pharmacist, NOC 31120Potentially yes
8 months RN + 4 months social workerNo, not simply by adding two different NOCs together
7 months RN + employment gap + 5 more months RNPotentially yes; experience no longer needs to be continuous
12 months RN outside CanadaPotentially yes
12 months of an unlisted healthcare occupationNo for this category

The work must still satisfy all other Express Entry and round-specific requirements.

Can Foreign Healthcare Work Experience Qualify?

Yes. You do not need one year of Canadian healthcare experience for the general Healthcare and Social Services category.

The required 12 months may have been gained:

in Canada or abroad.

This makes the category relevant to internationally trained professionals who have not yet worked in Canada.

Example: Nurse Outside Canada

A registered nurse with 18 months of recent qualifying work experience outside Canada under NOC 31301 may satisfy the category work-experience requirement.

Canadian nursing experience is not required by this category.

Example: Physiotherapist Outside Canada

A physiotherapist with 12 qualifying months under NOC 31202 abroad may also satisfy the category requirement.

Example: Social Worker Outside Canada

Social workers under NOC 41300 are included in the current category. Eligible foreign experience can count.

The next question is whether that person also qualifies for an underlying Express Entry program.

Is Your Job Title Enough to Prove Your NOC?

No. This is one of the most common mistakes when checking category eligibility.

Your employer might use a title such as:

  • Clinical coordinator
  • Counsellor
  • Healthcare assistant
  • Medical technician
  • Community worker
  • Pharmacy assistant
  • Therapist

but a job title alone does not determine your NOC.

Canada’s NOC system classifies occupations based on the nature of the work and duties.

A practical NOC check should look like this:

  • Step 1: Find the Possible NOC

Search the official Canadian NOC system using your job title and related terms.

  • Step 2: Read the Lead Statement

Does the occupation describe the type of work you actually performed?

  • Step 3: Compare the Main Duties

Your employment duties should substantially correspond to the NOC rather than being selected simply because the title sounds similar.

  • Step 4: Check the Exact NOC Against the Current IRCC Category List

Do not use an old healthcare occupation list.

The list can change.

One of the stronger features of current high-ranking information pages is occupation lookup, but the Government of Canada table should remain the final source for whether a NOC is currently included.

Practical NOC Examples

Registered Nurse

NOC 31301 — Registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses

If your actual duties match this NOC and you have the required recent experience, it is currently an eligible healthcare occupation.

Licensed Practical Nurse

NOC 32101 — Licensed practical nurses

This is separate from registered nursing and has a different NOC.

Do not select 31301 simply because both occupations involve nursing.

Social Worker

NOC 41300 — Social workers

Social work is specifically included in the Healthcare and Social Services category.

Social and Community Service Worker

NOC 42201 — Social and community service workers

This is not the same NOC as a social worker.

The distinction can matter because duties, education and professional roles may differ.

Pharmacy Technician

NOC 32124 — Pharmacy technicians

This is different from:

NOC 33103 — Pharmacy technical assistants and pharmacy assistants

and from:

NOC 31120 — Pharmacists

All three currently appear in the category, but they are separate occupations.

Choosing the wrong one simply because all three work in pharmacy can create problems with your Express Entry work history.

Do Healthcare Workers Need a Canadian Licence to Qualify for the Category?

Do not confuse immigration selection with professional licensing.

The current Healthcare and Social Services category criteria focus on:

  • Express Entry eligibility;
  • qualifying recent work experience;
  • an eligible NOC; and
  • the requirements of the invitation round.

The category page does not say that every foreign healthcare worker must already hold a Canadian professional licence before becoming category-eligible.

However, many healthcare professions are regulated in Canada.

If you intend to actually practise a regulated profession in Canada, you generally need to have your credentials recognized and obtain the required provincial or territorial licence or certification.

The regulator and process depend on the profession and the province or territory.

Why This Distinction Matters

A foreign-trained nurse could potentially satisfy the Express Entry healthcare category requirements using qualifying nursing experience abroad.

That does not automatically authorize that person to work as a registered nurse in Canada.

Permanent residence eligibility and permission to practise a regulated profession are separate issues.

If You Are a Doctor, Read This Before Choosing a Category

Doctors need to understand that Canada now has two different Express Entry category routes that can involve physician NOCs.

Healthcare and Social Services Category

The following physician NOCs appear in the broader Healthcare and Social Services category:

  • 31100 — Specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine
  • 31101 — Specialists in surgery
  • 31102 — General practitioners and family physicians

For this broader category, qualifying work experience may be gained in Canada or abroad.

Physicians With Canadian Work Experience Category

Canada also created a separate 2026 category specifically for physicians with Canadian work experience.

For that category, the qualifying physician experience must have been gained in Canada.

Practical Example:

A family physician with:

two years of recent physician experience outside Canada
and
no Canadian physician work experience

may potentially satisfy the occupation requirement for the broader Healthcare and Social Services category.

That person would not satisfy the separate Physicians with Canadian Work Experience category based only on foreign physician experience.

This distinction is important when reading draw announcements.

Special ECA Rules for Doctors and Pharmacists

If you completed your education outside Canada, an Educational Credential Assessment may be required depending on the Express Entry program you use.

Healthcare applicants should also know that IRCC has special ECA rules for some professions.

Doctors

If your primary occupation is:

  • NOC 31100 — Specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine
  • NOC 31101 — Specialists in surgery
  • NOC 31102 — General practitioners and family physicians

IRCC states that the ECA for your primary medical diploma must be obtained from the Medical Council of Canada.

Pharmacists

If your primary occupation is NOC 31120 — Pharmacist and you need a licence to practise, the assessment must be completed by the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada.

If the pharmacy-related position does not require professional licensure, different ECA rules may apply.

ECA Is Not the Same as Professional Licensure

An ECA is used for immigration purposes to assess foreign education.

It does not automatically give you the right to practise a regulated healthcare profession in Canada.

Professional licensing is a separate process.

Do You Need a Job Offer?

The Healthcare and Social Services category itself does not require a Canadian job offer.

You can potentially qualify based on eligible foreign work experience without first securing employment in Canada.

However, you still need to satisfy the underlying Express Entry program requirements that apply to your profile.

A job offer also should not be confused with CRS points. Since March 25, 2025, Express Entry no longer awards the previous additional CRS points simply for having an eligible arranged job offer.

Language Score for the Healthcare Category

Is There a Special Language Score for the Healthcare Category?

No separate healthcare-specific language threshold is listed for this category.

Instead, your required language level depends primarily on the Express Entry program through which you qualify.

This means being a nurse, doctor or social worker does not exempt you from Express Entry language requirements.

You still need valid results from an IRCC-approved language test.

Your language score can also materially affect your CRS ranking even after you satisfy the healthcare category requirements.

What If Your CRS Is Below Recent Healthcare Draws?

Do not treat the most recent cut-off as a permanent threshold.

Instead, identify which parts of your CRS can realistically change.

Depending on your profile, these may include:

  • improving English results;
  • adding qualifying French results;
  • obtaining a higher educational credential assessment result where applicable;
  • gaining additional eligible work experience;
  • spouse language or education factors;
  • Canadian study or work factors;
  • a provincial nomination.

The useful question is not:

“How do I get to 475?”

It is:

“Which changes to my actual profile produce the largest legitimate CRS increase?”

The answer is different for a 29-year-old nurse with a master’s degree and a 39-year-old pharmacist with a bachelor’s degree.

Can French Help a Healthcare Candidate?

Yes.

Category eligibility can overlap.

A nurse, pharmacist, physician or social worker who also reaches the French-language threshold may potentially be eligible for both:

Healthcare and Social Services category-based rounds

and

French-language proficiency category-based rounds

provided all requirements are met.

French may also add CRS points independently of category eligibility.

For someone already working in an eligible healthcare NOC but sitting below recent healthcare CRS cut-offs, improving French can therefore affect the profile in more than one way.

Four Healthcare Profiles: Who May Qualify?

Profile 1 — Foreign Registered Nurse

Experience: 24 months
NOC: 31301
Location: Outside Canada
Experience within last 3 years: Yes

Healthcare category: Potentially eligible.

Foreign nursing experience is allowed.

The candidate still needs underlying Express Entry eligibility.

Profile 2 — Nurse With a Career Break

Experience: 7 months as RN
Break: 5 months
Additional RN experience: 6 months
NOC: 31301
All qualifying work falls within last 3 years: Yes

Healthcare category: Potentially eligible.

The 2026 rule no longer requires the 12 months to be continuous.

Profile 3 — Two Different Healthcare NOCs

Experience: 8 months as an RN
Experience: 5 months as a social worker

Healthcare category: Do not simply combine the two periods to claim the 12-month category requirement.

IRCC requires the qualifying experience to be accumulated in a single listed occupation.

Profile 4 — Foreign-Trained Doctor

Experience: 3 years as a family physician outside Canada
NOC: 31102
Canadian physician experience: None

The candidate may potentially meet the occupation requirement for the Healthcare and Social Services category.

The same foreign experience would not satisfy the separate Physicians with Canadian Work Experience category.

What Documents Should Healthcare Candidates Prepare Carefully?

The exact document checklist depends on the Express Entry program and personal circumstances, but healthcare applicants should pay particular attention to evidence supporting their claimed work experience.

Your employment evidence should make it possible to verify important information such as:

  • employer;
  • dates of employment;
  • position;
  • work hours;
  • compensation where required;
  • actual job duties.

The duties are particularly important when NOC classification is not obvious.

For example, claiming NOC 41300 simply because your employer called you a “social worker” is weaker than showing that your actual duties correspond to that NOC.

Likewise, a pharmacy employee should not automatically assume they are a pharmacist, pharmacy technician or pharmacy assistant based only on workplace setting.

When Should You Update Your Express Entry Profile?

Update your profile when relevant information changes, including qualifying changes to:

  • work experience;
  • language results;
  • education;
  • marital status;
  • Canadian work or study history;
  • other information affecting eligibility or CRS.

For category selection, accurate work history is particularly important because IRCC uses information in the Express Entry profile to identify candidates who meet category requirements.

If your profile does not accurately show your qualifying healthcare experience, you should not assume IRCC will identify it from information that was never properly entered.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many healthcare occupations are eligible for Express Entry in 2026?

The current Healthcare and Social Services category contains 37 NOC occupations.

How much healthcare work experience do I need?

You need at least 12 months of full-time work experience or an equal amount of part-time experience within the last three years in one eligible occupation. The experience does not need to be continuous.

Can healthcare experience outside Canada count?

Yes. The qualifying experience may be gained in Canada or abroad.

Does my healthcare occupation have to be my primary Express Entry NOC?

No. IRCC specifically states that the qualifying category experience may be in a listed occupation regardless of your primary occupation.

Can I combine six months as a nurse and six months as a social worker?

Not simply to satisfy the category rule. IRCC requires the qualifying experience to be in a single eligible occupation.

What was the latest Healthcare Express Entry CRS score?

The latest Healthcare and Social Services round as of September 10, 2026 was held on September 4, 2026. IRCC issued 3,500 invitations and the CRS cut-off was 475.

How many healthcare ITAs have been issued in 2026?

The three healthcare rounds held on February 20, June 25 and September 4, 2026 issued a combined 11,500 invitations.

Do nurses qualify for category-based Express Entry?

Several nursing occupations are included, including:

  • NOC 31300 — Nursing coordinators and supervisors
  • NOC 31301 — Registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses
  • NOC 31302 — Nurse practitioners
  • NOC 32101 — Licensed practical nurses
  • NOC 33102 — Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates
Your actual duties must match the NOC being claimed.

Are social workers eligible?

Yes. Social workers — NOC 41300 are currently included. Social and community service workers — NOC 42201 are also included as a separate occupation.

Are pharmacists eligible?

Yes. Pharmacists — NOC 31120 are currently eligible. Pharmacy technicians and pharmacy assistants also have separate eligible NOCs.

Are doctors eligible with foreign work experience?

Potentially, yes. Physician NOCs 31100, 31101 and 31102 are included in the broader Healthcare and Social Services category, where qualifying experience can be gained abroad. This should not be confused with the separate 2026 Physicians with Canadian Work Experience category.

Do I need a Canadian healthcare licence before entering the healthcare category?

The category itself does not list possession of a Canadian professional licence as a general eligibility requirement. However, many healthcare professions are regulated, and you may need credential recognition and professional licensing before you can practise that occupation in Canada.

Do I need a Canadian job offer?

The Healthcare and Social Services category itself does not require one.

Does healthcare category eligibility add CRS points?

No automatic occupation bonus is added simply because your NOC appears on the list. Instead, it makes you eligible to be considered in Healthcare and Social Services category-based rounds.

Conclusion

The Healthcare and Social Services category remains one of the most relevant Express Entry options for qualified healthcare and social service professionals in 2026, especially because eligible work experience can be gained either in Canada or abroad.

But the occupation list is only the starting point.

A strong profile requires you to confirm that:

  • your actual duties match an eligible NOC;
  • you have at least 12 months of qualifying experience in one eligible occupation within the last three years;
  • you qualify for one of the Express Entry programs;
  • your language, education and other profile details are documented correctly; and
  • your CRS score is competitive enough for future healthcare category rounds.

Internationally trained professionals should also separate two issues that are often confused: immigration eligibility and professional licensing. You may qualify for Express Entry based on foreign healthcare experience even if you still need additional credential recognition or licensing before practising your profession in Canada.

For physicians, it is also important to distinguish the broader Healthcare and Social Services category from the separate Physicians with Canadian Work Experience category introduced for 2026.

If your NOC is on the current healthcare list, the next useful step is not simply to wait for another draw. Review your full Express Entry profile, calculate your CRS, verify your NOC against your actual duties, and identify whether language scores, education, work history or another immigration pathway could strengthen your position before the next round.
